Stamford is known for its medieval core of 17th-18th century stone buildings. Many of these buildings are still equipped with what you see here at the base of their front entrances. Looks fairly decorative doesn't it? Especially when you consider it was used to scrape the mud and horse manure from your boots before entering the building.
